Judgment

— I Ching · classical

Innocence has sublime success. Steadfastness furthers. If someone is not as they should be, misfortune; it does not further to undertake anything.

Image

— Great Image

Under heaven thunder rolls: all things attain the natural state of innocence. Thus the ancient kings, rich in virtue and in harmony with the time, fostered and nourished all beings.

Six Lines

— Bottom to top

Innocent behavior brings good fortune.
Move from a pure heart; the natural step is the lucky step.
Six in the second · 六二 ⚋ yin
If one does not count on the harvest while plowing, nor on the use of the ground while clearing it — it furthers one to undertake something.
Act without calculating outcomes; the unforced engagement is exactly what makes the move favorable.
Six in the third · 六三 ⚋ yin
Undeserved misfortune. The cow that was tethered by someone is the wanderer's gain, the citizen's loss.
Black swan — someone passes by and gains, your town loses. Bear it without recrimination.
Nine in the fourth · 九四 ⚊ yang
One can be persevering. No blame.
Hold firm to your nature; correctness without forcing yields no blame.
Nine in the fifth · 九五 ⚊ yang
Use no medicine for an illness incurred through no fault of your own. It will pass of itself.
An ailment from outside, not from your action — do not over-treat. Hold composure and it passes.
Nine at the top · 上九 ⚊ yang
Innocent action brings misfortune. Nothing furthers.
Even pure motion, when persisted in at the wrong moment, becomes harm. Stillness is also a form of integrity.

Modern Readings

— Interdisciplinary

Career & Management

Compliance discipline, ordinary-truth foundation. Refuse the loopholes and gray zones. When a system-wide shock arrives that is not your fault, do not panic into harm.

Psychology & Cognition

'Karma is real.' Act with a clean conscience and no calculation. Black-swan misfortune asks for equanimity, not over-correction.

Decision Guidance

Steadfastness furthers; deviation invites disaster. For unearned trouble, do not over-medicate — let it pass.

Western Parallels

— Cross-cultural

Taoist 'wu wei' (effortless action); Stoic indifference to externals; Daniel Kahneman's 'noise' (random misfortune that is not signal); the Hippocratic 'primum non nocere' (first do no harm) for unearned trouble.
