Judgment
— I Ching · classical
利建侯行师。
It furthers one to install helpers and to set armies marching.
Image
— Great Image
雷出地奋,豫,先王以作乐崇德,殷荐之上帝,以配祖考。
Thunder comes resounding out of the earth: the image of enthusiasm. Thus the ancient kings made music to honor merit, and offered it with splendor to the supreme deity, inviting their ancestors to be present.
Six Lines
— Bottom to top
Initial Six · 初六
⚋ yin
鸣豫,凶。
Enthusiasm that expresses itself brings misfortune.
Trumpeting small wins, public preening at the first taste of success — invites misfortune.
Six in the second · 六二
⚋ yin
介于石,不终日,贞吉。
Firm as a rock. Not a whole day. Steadfastness brings good fortune.
Heart steady as stone; refuse to drown in the collective high. When everyone is cheering, you alone read the risk early.
Six in the third · 六三
⚋ yin
盱豫,悔。迟有悔。
Enthusiasm that looks upward brings remorse. Hesitation brings remorse.
Sycophantic enthusiasm directed at superiors; delay in correction compounds the regret.
Nine in the fourth · 九四
⚊ yang
由豫,大有得。勿疑,朋盍簪。
The source of enthusiasm — great possessions are gained. Do not doubt; friends gather like hair through a clasp.
The energetic center of the movement, free of doubt; allies converge like hair gathered through a single pin.
Six in the fifth · 六五
⚋ yin
贞疾,恒不死。
Steadily ill, but never dying.
Long indulgence in ease produces a chronic ailment that never quite kills — kept barely alive by inner integrity.
Six at the top · 上六
⚋ yin
冥豫,成有渝,无咎。
Deluded enthusiasm. Completion has been reached. Change brings no blame.
Lost in revelry to the point of clouding. If awakened in time and willing to change, blame is averted.
Modern Readings
— Interdisciplinary
Career & Management
Team motivation, big launches, brand campaigns — enormous energy unlocked. Leadership must stay sober and prevent the 'kill-by-praise' trap.
Psychology & Cognition
Enjoy enthusiasm but never submerge in it. When the environment is exuberant, reserve risk capital silently.
Decision Guidance
Mobilize energy with anthem and ceremony; install a core; act swiftly on the wave — but always with the stone-steady eye reading the next downturn.
Western Parallels
— Cross-cultural
Émile Durkheim's 'collective effervescence'; Drucker on the danger of confusing morale with strategy; behavioral finance's 'irrational exuberance' (Shiller); Nietzsche's Dionysian energy paired with Apollonian discipline.
