Judgment
— I Ching · classical
The powerful prince is honored with horses in large numbers. In a single day he is granted audience three times.
Image
— Great Image
The sun rises over the earth: the image of progress. Thus the superior person, of their own accord, makes their own brightness clearer.
Six Lines
— Bottom to top
Initial Six · 初六
⚋ yin
Progressing, but turned back. Perseverance brings good fortune. If one meets with no confidence, one should remain calm. No mistake.
First attempts to rise meet resistance. Hold integrity, stay generous even when not trusted; no mistake.
Six in the second · 六二
⚋ yin
Progressing, but in sorrow. Perseverance brings good fortune. Then one obtains great happiness from one's ancestress.
Climbing with anxiety about responsibility — yet from a senior figure (the matriarch), great blessing arrives.
Six in the third · 六三
⚋ yin
All are in accord. Remorse disappears.
Carried upward by the trust of the group; regret vanishes.
Nine in the fourth · 九四
⚊ yang
Progress like a hamster. Perseverance brings danger.
Climbing by sneaky, hoarding, dim-light methods (the rodent). Persistence in this is dangerous.
Six in the fifth · 六五
⚋ yin
Remorse disappears. Take not gain and loss to heart. Undertakings bring good fortune. Everything serves to further.
Regret vanishes; release attachment to gain and loss; bold engagement; nothing fails to further.
Nine at the top · 上九
⚊ yang
Making progress with the horns is permissible only for the purpose of punishing one's own city. To be conscious of danger brings good fortune. No blame. Perseverance brings humiliation.
Advance to the very tip — only legitimate use is self-discipline (chastise one's own city). Persistence beyond that is humiliating.
Modern Readings
— Interdisciplinary
Career & Management
Promotion, IPO clearance, brand opening up. Actively report upward, build transparent communication, reward subordinates generously. Avoid the 'hamster' archetype — sneaky climbing that audits will eventually catch.
Psychology & Cognition
On the rise: seize core opportunities; do not let petty gain-and-loss accounting (xi de wu xu) entangle your stride.
Decision Guidance
Make your own brightness brighter from within (zi zhao ming de); ascend openly, never by the rodent's path.
Western Parallels
— Cross-cultural
Carol Dweck's growth mindset applied to promotion seasons; the Stoic 'amor fati' for both setbacks and breakthroughs; the contrast between Machiavellian and Aurelian ascents to power.
