Judgment

— I Ching · classical

If you are sincere, you have light and success. Steadfastness brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water.

Image

— Great Image

Clouds rise up to heaven: the image of waiting. The superior person eats and drinks, is joyous and of good cheer.

Six Lines

— Bottom to top

Waiting on the outskirts. It furthers to be steady. No blame.
Risk is still distant. Long-range discipline beats early restlessness.
Nine in the second · 九二 ⚊ yang
Waiting on the sand. Some gossip. In the end, good fortune.
Pressure tightens; public doubt rises. Hold the internal anchor against the noise.
Nine in the third · 九三 ⚊ yang
Waiting in mud — bringing about the arrival of the enemy.
Probing forward into liquidity or compliance trouble exposes you to predators.
Six in the fourth · 六四 ⚋ yin
Waiting in blood. Get out of the pit.
Caught at the bleeding edge — debt crisis, broken cash flow. Retreat decisively from the kill zone.
Nine in the fifth · 九五 ⚊ yang
Waiting with food and wine. Steadfastness brings good fortune.
Endure with grace, sustain the team's basic well-being, and let the inflection point arrive on its terms.
Six at the top · 上六 ⚋ yin
One falls into the pit. Three uninvited guests arrive. Honor them, and in the end good fortune.
At the bottom, unexpected outside help arrives. Receive it with humility; this is the inflection.

Modern Readings

— Interdisciplinary

Career & Management

Industry winter, policy vacuum, market lull after a research breakthrough. Best move: protect runway, do psychological work with the team, refuse motion for motion's sake.

Psychology & Cognition

Active waiting — converting the void into compound strategic capital. Anxiety is the enemy; meaningful, low-cost daily practice is the cure.

Decision Guidance

Sincerity (fu/孚) is the constant. Don't lunge for action; let the tipping point come to you, then move decisively (cross the great water).

Western Parallels

— Cross-cultural

Stoicism on 'wait until ready' (Marcus Aurelius); Nassim Taleb's 'optionality' and 'antifragile' positioning during dormant phases; Charlie Munger's 'sitting on cash and patience'; Heidegger's 'gelassenheit' (releasement, calm awaiting).
