Judgment
— I Ching · classical
Success. I do not seek the young fool; the young fool seeks me. At the first divination I instruct; if asked two or three times it is mere annoyance, and I do not instruct. Steadfastness furthers.
Image
— Great Image
A spring wells up at the foot of the mountain: the image of youth. The superior person fosters their character through resolute conduct.
Six Lines
— Bottom to top
Initial Six · 初六
⚋ yin
To dispel folly, discipline is useful — to remove fetters. To proceed in this way alone, however, brings humiliation.
Beginners need firm rules and clear consequences first; pure punishment without dignity, however, is its own failure.
Nine in the second · 九二
⚊ yang
Bearing fools with patience brings good fortune. To take a wife brings good fortune. The son carries the house.
High tolerance and patient mentoring build a succession line; eventually the apprentice runs the household.
Six in the third · 六三
⚋ yin
Do not take such a maiden — when she sees a wealthy man, she loses possession of herself. Nothing furthers.
Avoid associates with no spine — those who flip to whoever pays more lack the operating condition for trust.
Six in the fourth · 六四
⚋ yin
Entangled folly brings humiliation.
Sealed inside a filter bubble, refusing new information, the mind suffocates by its own design.
Six in the fifth · 六五
⚋ yin
Childlike folly brings good fortune.
Holding high position with the openness of a child — receptive, humble, eager to learn — is the ideal learning posture.
Nine at the top · 上九
⚊ yang
To strike against folly. It does not further to commit a transgression; it furthers to ward off transgressions.
Sharp corrective force is sometimes required. Aim it at restoring the system, never at private vengeance.
Modern Readings
— Interdisciplinary
Career & Management
Onboarding, training programs, market education. Effective pedagogy combines firm standards (line 1) with patient absorption (line 2) — never one without the other.
Psychology & Cognition
Acknowledge the 'peak of Mount Stupid' in the Dunning-Kruger curve. Seek mentors actively; learning is initiated by the student, not pushed by the teacher.
Decision Guidance
Wait for the genuine question; refuse repeated bad-faith inquiries. Set conditions, then mentor with patience.
Western Parallels
— Cross-cultural
Socratic method — knowledge begins in the awareness of ignorance; Aristotle's hexis (formed character through practice); Carol Dweck's 'growth mindset'; the Zen 'beginner's mind' (shoshin); Charlie Munger on the latticework of mental models.
