否之匪人，不利君子贞，大往小来。
Standstill — the wrong sort of people. The perseverance of the superior person does not further. The great departs, the small approaches.

天地不交，否，君子以俭德辟难，不可荣以禄。
Heaven and earth do not unite: the image of standstill. Thus the superior person retreats from inferior tendencies, refusing honors with their salary.

拔茅茹，以其汇，贞吉，亨。
When ribbon grass is pulled up, the sod comes with it. Each according to its kind. Steadfastness brings good fortune and success.
In standstill, comrades withdraw together. Coordinated retreat preserves the cohort.
Six in the second · 六二
⚋ yin
包承，小人吉，大人否，亨。
They bear and endure. Good fortune for inferior people. The standstill serves to help the great person attain success.
Inferiors prosper by accommodation; the great refuses cooperation with the rot, and gains a different fortune through it.
Six in the third · 六三

包羞。
They bear shame.
The shame of crouching low and going along to keep a position one should not hold.
Nine in the fourth · 九四
⚊ yang
有命，无咎，畴离祉。
He who acts at the command of the highest remains without blame. Those of like mind partake of the blessing.
A mandate to reverse the standstill arrives. Acting on it, with comrades, releases the field.
Nine in the fifth · 九五
⚊ yang
休否，大人吉。其亡其亡，系于苞桑。
Standstill is giving way. Good fortune for the great person. 'What if it should fail, what if it should fail?' In this way one ties it to a cluster of mulberry shoots.
The leader forces the deadlock to crack open. Sustain it by carrying a near-mortal sense of risk — only then is it rooted like trees to the bank.

倾否，先否后喜。
Standstill comes to an end. First standstill, then good fortune.
The stoppage finally overturns. After the long pause, fortune.
