Fellowship with people in the open. Success. It furthers one to cross the great water. The perseverance of the superior person furthers.

Heaven together with fire: the image of fellowship with men. Thus the superior person organizes the clans and discriminates among things.

Fellowship at the gate. No blame.
Open, public-facing association without faction. Transparency at the threshold is its own safeguard.

同人于宗，吝。
Fellowship within the clan. Humiliation.
Forming only inside one's tribe — narrow, exclusionary, self-defeating.
Nine in the third · 九三
⚊ yang
伏戎于莽，升其高陵，三岁不兴。
He hides weapons in the thicket; he climbs the high hill in front of it. For three years he does not rise up.
Suspicion and concealed defense make true union impossible. Three years lost to false vigilance.

乘其墉，弗克攻，吉。
He climbs upon his wall; he cannot attack. Good fortune.
About to attack, he restrains himself and returns to right relation — good fortune through reflection.

同人，先号咷而后笑，大师克相遇。
People bound in fellowship first weep and lament, but afterward they laugh. After great struggles they succeed in meeting.
Misunderstandings broken through tears, the long-separated meet at last. Like-minded ranks finally converge.

同人于郊，无悔。
Fellowship with people in the meadow. No remorse.
Open, public meeting on neutral ground; high ambitions unmet, but no regret — the bond is genuine.
