The Wanderer

Sojourner · No deep roots · Discreet vigilance
Upper · Li ☲ Fire / Lower · Gen ☶ Mountain

Judgment

— I Ching · classical

The Wanderer. Success through smallness. Perseverance brings good fortune for the wanderer.

Image

— Great Image

Fire on the mountain: the image of the wanderer. Thus the superior person is clear-minded and cautious in imposing penalties, and protracts no lawsuits.

Six Lines

— Bottom to top

If the wanderer busies themselves with trivial things, they draw down misfortune upon themselves.
Sojourner who fusses over petty matters (lu suo suo) — invites disaster on himself.
Six in the second · 六二 ⚋ yin
The wanderer comes to an inn. He has their property with them. They obtain the perseverance of a young servant.
Reaches a safe lodging (lu ji ci); brings their funds; gains a loyal servant. Solid traveling state.
Nine in the third · 九三 ⚊ yang
The wanderer's inn burns down. They lose the perseverance of their young servant. Danger.
Inn burnt by their own arrogance; servant lost — perseverance there is dangerous.
Nine in the fourth · 九四 ⚊ yang
The wanderer rests in a shelter. He obtains their property and an axe. My heart is not glad.
Temporary shelter and means (zi fu) — survival yes, but no real belonging; the heart unsatisfied.
Six in the fifth · 六五 ⚋ yin
He shoots a pheasant. It drops with the first arrow. In the end this brings both praise and office.
Shoots the pheasant (some loss in the attempt), but the gesture wins commendation and appointment — small concession for great esteem.
Nine at the top · 上九 ⚊ yang
The bird's nest burns up. The wanderer laughs at first, then must needs lament and weep. Through carelessness they lose their cow. Misfortune.
Arrogance destroys the only shelter (the bird's nest); laughing turns to weeping; the foundational virtue (the cow) lost through complacency. Misfortune.

Modern Readings

— Interdisciplinary

Career & Management

Overseas expansion, frequent job-hopping transitions, business travel for negotiations. Respect host laws and norms; do not become a guest who tries to rearrange the furniture; guard your cash flow (zi fu).

Psychology & Cognition

'A stranger in a strange land' — prepare for the loneliness of drift. Until you have built a real base, low profile and wariness are survival hygiene.

Decision Guidance

Success through smallness. Modesty and respect (line 5: shoot the pheasant for commendation). Never the swagger of line 6 — burning your own nest.

Western Parallels

— Cross-cultural

The expatriate's wisdom literature (Pico Iyer); Edward Hall's cross-cultural pragmatics; Stoic exile philosophy (Seneca's 'On the Tranquility of Mind'); Hannah Arendt on the condition of the refugee; the Sufi/dervish tradition of voluntary travel.
