Being prepared brings good fortune. If there are secret designs, it is disquieting.
Singular, prepared sincerity (yu) brings fortune; double-hearted intent (you ta) brings unrest.

鸣鹤在阴，其子和之；我有好爵，吾与尔靡之。
A crane calling in the shade. Its young answers it. I have a good goblet. I will share it with you.
A crane sings in the shaded place; its chick replies — unspoken resonance across distance; the offer to share the wine is the metaphor for true inward kinship.

得敌，或鼓或罢，或泣或歌。
He finds a comrade. Now he beats the drum, now he stops. Now he sobs, now he sings.
Bound to the wrong partner; his emotions oscillate (drum, stop, weep, sing) — out of self-mastery.

月几望，马匹亡，无咎。
The moon nearly at the full. The team horse goes astray. No blame.
Inner virtue near complete (yue ji wang); release the lateral attachments (the team-mate horse); singular upward focus. No blame.

有孚挛如，无咎。
He possesses truth, which links together. No blame.
Truth that binds — supreme cohesion through sincerity (you fu luan ru). No blame.

翰音登于天，贞凶。
Cockcrow penetrating to heaven. Perseverance brings misfortune.
A rooster's voice trying to ascend to heaven (han yin deng yu tian) — fame without substance; persistence is misfortune.
