The Abysmal

KǍN
Compounding danger · Sincerity through risk · Water-mind
Upper · Kan ☵ Water / Lower · Kan ☵ Water

Judgment

— I Ching · classical

The Abysmal repeated. If you are sincere, you have success in your heart, and whatever you do succeeds.

Image

— Great Image

Water flows on uninterruptedly and reaches its goal: the image of the Abysmal repeated. Thus the superior person walks in lasting virtue and carries on the business of teaching.

Six Lines

— Bottom to top

Repetition of the Abysmal. In the abyss, one falls into a pit. Misfortune.
Inside one pit, falling into a deeper one. Compounding descent.
Nine in the second · 九二 ⚊ yang
The abyss is dangerous. One should strive to attain small things only.
In the midst of danger, micro-wins only. Sequential small successes, not heroic leaps.
Six in the third · 六三 ⚋ yin
Forward and backward, abyss on abyss. In such danger, pause at first and wait, otherwise you will fall into a pit. Do not act in this way.
Surrounded; both directions show pit. Pause completely; any motion descends.
Six in the fourth · 六四 ⚋ yin
A jug of wine, a bowl of rice with it. Earthen vessels, simply handed in through the window. Certainly no blame in this.
When resources are exhausted, drop all show; pass essentials honestly through whatever opening (a window will do). Bare-bones sincerity passes through where polish cannot.
Nine in the fifth · 九五 ⚊ yang
The abyss is not filled to overflowing. It is filled only to the rim. No blame.
Danger reaches the edge but does not overflow. Hold central balance; no blame.
Six at the top · 上六 ⚋ yin
Bound with cords and ropes, shut in between thorn-hedged prison walls — for three years one does not find the way. Misfortune.
Locked in despair, surrounded by thorns; the way out hidden for years. Misfortune.

Modern Readings

— Interdisciplinary

Career & Management

Serial PR crises, recurring large losses, cascading litigation. Method: never conceal the truth (you must have sincerity); solve one core problem at a time; outlast.

Psychology & Cognition

Face fear directly. At the lowest emotional ebb, do not thrash. Hold core conviction, like water, find any path that descends to the next equilibrium.

Decision Guidance

Repetition implies practice. Walk in lasting virtue; teach as you go. In poverty of resources, the sincerity at the windowsill (line 4) is your highest move.

Western Parallels

— Cross-cultural

Nassim Taleb's 'antifragile' — gaining from disorder; Viktor Frankl's 'meaning in suffering'; Bruce Lee's water philosophy ('be water, my friend'); the Stoic premeditatio malorum (rehearsing hardship in advance).
